Lil Temple On The PrairieThe new asian cultural garden along the Des Moines River in Downtown Des Moines. Bringing a little taste of the mideast to the midwest. Newly finished after several years of construction, it was under water during the recent flooding. The water have receded now and it appears very little damage was done. I found a gat3e down in the construction fence and went in for a sneak preview up close and WIDE. I look forward to capturing its beauty in all different weather.
Thanks to all for your words of concern, I live South of the city, and since my job is on the Southwest corner of the city I was not effected by the rising waters. The downtown area was in threat when a new levy from the 93 floods broke in the Birdland area. There were many homes flooded by the levy breaking, but that did cause the river to drop rapidly. The rivers are back down to almost norma l levels now and the threats are over. The cleanup process will go on the rest of the summer no dought. This just serves to remind us,Nature will take it's course. We build along these great rivers and then build Dams and levys and flood walls to protect us from the ragindg waters . Much easier I would think to build outside of the floodplains, but what do I know,LOL
Flooded HeartlandThe flooding coninues in the nations heartland, Rivers are over their banks, and more water is being let out of Saylorville Resevoir to prevent the Dam giving way. We hav3e had more severe weather and there are more thundertorms on the way.
The city of Des Moines closed down all major bridges downtown last eveing, and there is flooding across several major thouroughfares into the downtown area. The rivers are powerful, currents raging, farm fields washed out, threatening buildings. All that water makes for some breutiful photo ops none the less. Flooding Update: The flooding in Des Moines has continued to get much worse, A new Levy build in 93 after the last big floods has broken, Many people in the lower areas of the city are evacuated from their homes.
We here are fortunate to live in a small town located up on a hill, I work on the close end of the city ,so I don't have to travel across many of the closed roads. My thoughts go out to those not so lucky, and we all pray for a cease in riany weather so the water can go back down. There will be alot of cleanup, and many of the fields recently planted may not survive. On te way home today one of the fields flooded on my way home had receded, leaving large sections of muddy ground. Steel Magnolias
There is romantic feeling one gets when they see a full blooming magnolia tree. These trees are marginal here in the midwest, The trees grow, but the blooms are rare, often snapped by late frosts,we may see bloom like this perhaps once every three years. Soon, with spring storms the petals will fall, leaving us again for a few more years. Fly Away
Spent the day with a local flickr friend, Saw alot of feathered wildlife, It was a lovely spring day that turned off overcast. The low light made it difficult to stop action. Realized how lacking in practice I am at flight images.Still thes are the best geese, heron flight images I have ever gotten, I bow to the master, Anni/Bored Barb.LOL Spring In Madison CountyAlthough we have had a couple of snow squals late last week, Spring is stubbornly arriving to Madison Co. The grass is turning green, the breezes are blowing and the sun is warm on your shoulder even on cool days.
I have been working hard, We have lost 2 night emplyess recently and replacement is just beginning to be trained to fill one opening. Due to short staffing,I worked alone this weekend. While Saturdays are generaly slow, there were a couple of things that I had to call someone t handle. The silence was eerie. There was the occasional sounds of the heaters going off in the shop that was enough to make me jump while I was in the girls room.LOL and around midnight I found my self singing, just to hear a voice in the empty building. What came to mind at the time was "Here comes the sun,Du du do do. LOL
I have stolen little moments to be inspired totake a photo or two, but found little time for an update. Today was a beautiful spring sky, filled with light fluffy clouds,A perfect day for a walk to The Covered Bridge. Later on a shopping trip for Hubby I found myself downtown. I needed to drop of some cough drops to my nephew who is now living at the Y. I was surprised to see the front of the civic building crammed with semi's. Setting up for the Jazz competitions.
Came home and enjoyed a couple movies Hubby rented earlier, I enjoyed I am legend, but of course I always enjoy Will Smith ,he has such a fine spirit (Bod aint bad either huh ladies? LOl ) I will be making my annual journey to the grand opening at the nurseries, but don't have alot on my list this year. Have way too much garden cleanup to do anyway. Moments Of InspirationEven though I have been hard at work, and sleeping whenever I get the chance, I was able to have moments of photo inspiration this week.
There was the co workers last night, where I ordered Scooby snacks from Northern Lights Pizza to celebrate. Then there is the obligatory sunset, shot on a "photo" break at work when I noticed the colors and light through the glass door and just had to take a minute to go out and shoot a pot of daffodils I had purchased against the waning light. And of course,It killed me to walk by these vivid crocus blooms on my way to the car each afternoon, so today after waking from my nap I finally spent a few minute laying in the spring grass to shoot these photos. These are just a sampling of this weeks photos.April showers de tomorrow, who knows what opportunities will arrise. And then this abstract macro taken with a little help from Hubby, who noticed I was battling the breeze and held a shovel beside the flowers to block the breeze, Thanks Hunny. Too tired... OK, half way trough the work week, Don't worry, I have taken a few moments to be creative, and I wish I felt energetic enough and had enough spare time to process them and share them with you. Should be able to catch up on the weekend. Until then, visit Steve and enjoy a show of the Northern lights.
April Fools Day...I remembe as a child the pranks we played on April Fools day, Now it seems like just another day. I hardly hear any mention of April fool anymore. Maybe that is the perils of maturity.
I celebrated my 46th B day yesterday. Hubby is on the road at this time, but I got together with a couple of friends for lunch. We all shared a piece of oreo ice cream cake .After lunch there were ordinary chores to run, mainly get gas for the week and buy cat and dog food. I enjoyed the afternoon, and when I returned home there was a pineapple upside down cake waiting for me. It was my BDay, I am allowed dessert all day if I want.LOL
I start another 4 day 12hr stint at work, so for now I will post a photo from my country drive the other afternoon. See ya in a few days.
Fresh Air And Sunshine...
When a friend mentioned the early spring tones in the landscape were uninspiring, I set out on a country drive to see what I could find capture despite the muddy tones of brown so prevalent now. Although tired from a lack of sleep since I had worked the previous night, the sunshine and fresh air of the late afternoon has given me new energy and inspiration.Hello...I have been feeling a bit disconnected of late. The move to Blogspot has not been well recieved.,and I have lost interest. I miss the interaction of my friends here on spaces. The hours I work leave me feeling exhasted even on my days off. I need sunshine,Green grass, fresh air and yes flowers.Of course with springs arrival I anticipate we all will be feeling alot better soon.
In my personal life there are still some things Out Of Sorts, and I struggle some days to keep my head above water. I won't go into that here. Lets just say I have a plan in place to take back my house, my life, and get some more enthusiasm to greet each day. I also want to make some changes in my community of friends.I need to make contact with my closest friends more often, and balance that with my network of friends from all over te web community. In an effort to accomplish these things,I have decided to change things up here. The direction this blog is going to take may not be 100% clear in my mind at this time, but let us say I am going to gear it toward my photography.
The garden will play a large role as well with the season apon us. I am thinking it would be nice to combine a photo or two like Barb's space, with a paragraph or so describing the general feelings of the day. Maybe somewhat like Red Willow Photography is doing. Trying to keep it simple, easy ,yet a touch more personal.
As always my photos can be viewed on flickr. I am going to do away with the blogspot blog,as much as it pains me to loose all the time and effort I put into posting there. Very few visit, and it hardly seems worth my effort. Also of late I have been getting some spam leading me to moderate comments.Way too much effoert for such little payback.
I hope you will welcome the changes and be here holding my hand as I make my way back into the light.... Spring FeverWell my friends, I decided I was in the mood for an update.
I am mostly well since my last posting, except some left over sinus drainage and an overall lack of energy. Most weeks I have to make myself get dressed and get out for fear I will just sit in the recliner and watch the world pass by on the tube. The writers strike hasn't helped. The usi=ual sitcoms and drama shows I enjoy have been reruns for a very long time now.
I think I have suffered from the long winter and the lack of light, as I find my self feeling better the more the sunlight stays each day as spring approaches. The fact I sleep whenthe sun is out in the early half of the day didn't help. Suddenly sunsets are coming 2 hrs later than they had in the not too distant past. The air is warmer, the snow is melting slowly, the rivers are once again running and making thier charming gurgling sounds, and while the world is now a shade of brown h, it still seems more cheerful.
We are officially in the season that comes between winter and spring. Mud season. The dogs cannot go out without dragging half thegarden soil in with them. During the next month it will vary between cold 30 degree days and balmy 60 degree days. As snow melts the rivers flood, fields will be covered in water, the farmers will wonder if they can get the crops in as needed. The sun shines, and I have already been able to drive with the sun roof open.
The kittens are 8 weeks old, and a bundle of energy. They run around the house, hiss and bat at Rosa, occasionally lay with Pete, and are climbing on everythng in sight. They truely are beautiful. Smoke has the mose Maine coon charactoristics, traits he gets from Lily who I believe to be a mixed main coon breed. He is a puffball, with tufts of hair in his toes, and ears, as well as the charactoristic tufts at ear tips. I hope he gets Lily's vocal abilities. She talks in the most charming way, vocalizing for food, water, and sometimes just to call her babies. She follows me from room to room, and also loves to follow me into the bathroom.
They eat dry food now and I don't have to soak in water very long. They are crunching very effectively. Lily steals whats left in their bowl as well as eating hers like a pig, and she's still skinny. Most days I feel like I am put on earth purely to put down food or water,LOl
Hope your spring brings a playful energetic spirit to you all.
